Guide to Watch Google Play Movies on Roku in 2023

by: Kunal Kumar/ Category(s) : Activation

You might be astonished to find that the Google Play Movies and TV app is no longer available on your Roku device or smart TV if you haven’t used it in a while. But don’t worry; we’ll show you how to use Google Play Movies on Roku in this article. Continue reading!

About Google Play Movies (now Google TV)

Google TV (previously Google Play Movies & TV) is a Google-operated internet video-on-demand service. Depending on availability, the service provides movies and television series for purchase or rental. The service was first released in May 2011 as Google Movies, and after its incorporation into the Google Play digital distribution service in 2012, it was renamed Google Play Movies & TV.

Most content is available in high definition, according to Google, and select titles have had a 4K Ultra HD video option since December 2016. Content can be seen on streaming devices, the Google Play website, a Google Chrome extension, or the Android and iOS mobile app. The mobile app and devices both support offline downloads.

In the United States, the Android app for Google Play Movies & TV has renamed Google TV in September 2020, adding content aggregation across streaming services. The renaming coincides with the release of an Android TV user interface with the same name on the Chromecast with Google TV media streamer. Google TV’s user interface is tightly linked to the Google TV video service. Users were advised in March 2021 that the app used on numerous TVs would no longer be available in June 2021 and that they should instead use the YouTube app.

Top features of Google TV

Depending on availability, Google TV provides movies and television series for purchase or rental. “Most movies and TV series on Google Play are available in high definition,” according to Google, with resolutions of 1,280720 pixels (720p) and 1,9201,080 pixels (1080p). In December 2016, Google added a 4K Ultra HD video option for certain movies, and in July 2017, it began selling 4K HDR material in the United States and Canada. Users can pre-order content and have it delivered automatically when it becomes available. The expiration date for rented content is stated on the content’s detail page.

What exactly happened to Google Play Movies on Roku?

The Google Play Movies and TV app were removed from a slew of streaming devices and televisions. On June 15, 2021, it was reduced for Roku devices as well as Samsung, LG, and Vizio smart TVs. That means you won’t be able to use it to rent or buy movies, and you won’t be able to access it.

To watch previously purchased material, you’ll have to utilize the YouTube app in the future. You can use the Google Play credits connected with your account to purchase new movies and TV shows on YouTube. Your Watchlist, on the other hand, will not migrate over, and family sharing will be limited. Google has a support page here that details all of the changes.

Google was rumored to be planning to merge the app with its new Google TV software, which was introduced earlier this year. Google TV introduces a new Android TV interface that is driven by Google’s machine intelligence, Google Assistant, and the Google Knowledge Graph. It is not a replacement for Android TV. It’s a software interface that runs on top of Android TV, Google’s full-featured operating system for set-top boxes, streaming devices, and smart TVs.

To be clear, the Google Play Movies and TV app are still available for Android and iOS users to download.
